A play is every now & againside ridiculed by modern critics for the excessive violence and horror in its late scenes. Plot
A play is placed in the court of Malfi (currently Amalfi), Italy over the time period 1504 to 1510. A Duchess, recently widowed, lessens dotty by using Antonio, however her brothers, non wishing her to part their inheritance, forbid her from either remarrying. Nonetheless, she secretly marries Antonio, the lowly steward, & bears him many youngsters.

A Duchess's lunatic & incestuously-obsessed brother Ferdin& threatens and disowns her. Around an attempt to escape, the Duchess & Antonio concoct a story that Antonio has swindled her away from her fortune & has to flee into exile. She requires Bosola into her confidence, non caring that he is the Key's spy, & arranges that he may deliver her jewelry to Antonio at his hiding-place around Ancona. She may join the children late, when pretending to produce the pilgrim's journey to the town nearby. A Cardinal hears of the project, instructs Bosola to banish the babies lovers, & sends soldiers to capture them. Antonio escapes by having their firstborn boy, however a Duchess, her maid & her ii immature tikes come returned to Malfi & executed by Bosola.
